SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.39 g, 12 h), circa 450-440. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath; in exergue, ketos to right. Rev. ΣVRAKOΣION Pearl-diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing single pendant earring and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 516 (V271/R367). Dewing 799-800 (same dies). HGC 2, 1311. SNG ANS 165 (same dies). SNG Lockett 934 (same dies). Lightly toned and of attractive Classical style. A few light marks and with minor areas of horn silver, otherwise, good very fine.
